CCSO 911 communication officers wanted; starting pay increased - Citrus County Chronicle CCSO 911 communication officers wanted; starting pay increased - Citrus County Chronicle Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:00 AM PDT Tiana Jarrell's eyes scoured a cluster of computer monitors with maps and details on 911 calls. Her hands glided across keyboards, ready to take a sudden phone call for help and relay the emergency to appropriate responders. Jarrell's first shift alone "on the floor" of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office's 911 Communications Center inside the Emergency Operations Center was July 4, 2020. Independence Day seemed somewhat fitting as it marked the end of Jarrell's 700 hours of paid intake training after her hiring in February. Government plans lie detector tests for terrorists but SNP is blocking them in Scotland - Daily Mail Government plans lie detector tests for terrorists but SNP is blocking them in Scotland - Daily Mail Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:00 AM PDT A Government plan to make terrorists take lie detector tests before they can be paroled from prison is being blocked in Scotland by Nicola Sturgeon 's SNP . The UK's independent reviewer of terror legislation, Jonathan Hall QC, suggested the tests could be used to assess a convicted terrorist's threat after they are released from jail.  Mr Hall stressed that the tests – called polygraphs – could be a 'sensible additional tool'. It was part of a raft of recommendations he made after ministers ordered a study following the stabbing to death of two people on London Bridge by a convicted terrorist in 2019.  Mr Hall recommended a change in the law to permit lie tests.  Nicola S...

Inconsistent approach on police psych exams - Concord Monitor Inconsistent approach on police psych exams - Concord Monitor Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:54 AM PDT After police applicants in New Hampshire are winnowed by a rigorous process of written tests, interviews, oral boards, polygraph tests and background checks, many prospective officers must also be psychologically evaluated before they go through the state police academy to become certified. Hudson Police Chief Bill Avery said psych tests are one component of the hiring process, but no less "vital" than the other screenings. And yet, the tests are used inconsistently – and sometimes not at all – by law enforcement agencies in the state. "It's tremendously concerning that there isn't a uniform standard for psych evals in New Hampshire," said Nicole Sawyer, one of a handful of psychologists in New Hampshire who performs psychological evaluations for police cand...

Researchers Built an ‘Online Lie Detector.’ Honestly, That Could Be a Problem - WIRED Researchers Built an ‘Online Lie Detector.’ Honestly, That Could Be a Problem - WIRED Posted: 21 Mar 2019 12:00 AM PDT The internet is full of lies . That maxim has become an operating assumption for any remotely skeptical person interacting anywhere online, from Facebook and Twitter to phishing-plagued inboxes to spammy comment sections to online dating and disinformation-plagued media. Now one group of researchers has suggested the first hint of a solution: They claim to have built a prototype for an "online polygraph" that uses machine learning to detect deception from text alone. But what they've actually demonstrated, according to a few machine learning academics, is the inherent danger of overblown machine learning claims. In last month's issue of the journal Computers in Human Behavior , Florida State University and Stanfor...
