Surveillance Cameras In Flatbush + Fund For Small Synagogues - Patch.com

Image
Welcome back, Ditmas Park-Flatbush! Let's get this Wednesday started. Here's everything happening today in town. First, today's weather: Partly sunny; breezy, milder. High: 45 Low: 43. Here are the top three stories in Ditmas Park-Flatbush today: A new map reveals the deep racial disparities behind New York City's surveillance cameras–both private and public–that are disproportionately placed in communities of color. The map, created by Amnesty International, documents a high number of them in Flatbush, but very few in Ditmas Park. (MIT Technology Review) The UJA Federation of New York announced a $250,000 fund for small synagogues in Brooklyn , with under 200 members in their congregation and little to no staff. The synagogues that will benefit are located in Flatbush, Kensington, Crown Heights, and beyond. Can Intelligence Tell How Far Putin Will Go? - War on the Rocks

Image
In a press conference at the end of last week, U.S. President Joe Biden said he was "convinced" that Russian President Vladimir Putin had decided to invade Ukraine. Asked why, he said simply: "We have a significant intelligence capability." Understanding the intentions of a foreign autocratic leader, particularly one shielded from the outside world and reliant on a small group of trusted advisors, is the Holy Grail for any intelligence service. America's spies, and their British colleagues, appear to have succeeded in that quest. We in the public are unlikely to know how until the relevant documents are declassified decades from now. But history can offer some hints about how Biden knows what he knows and why he has chosen to disclose some of this information publicly. Cold War archives show that accurate warnings about an adversary's intentions and capabilities were seldom, if ever, the result of a single kind of intelligence. Rather, they were in...

Ring, SimpliSafe, and Three Other DIY Home Security Systems Vulnerable to Hacking - ConsumerReports.org

Image
Consumer Reports shared its findings with the five manufacturers and asked each if it would update its systems to prevent jamming. Only Eufy explicitly said it will fix the jamming issue (the company plans to release a software update in early April). Cove said it is considering moving to encrypted sensors for a future version of its system and has "been monitoring whether the cost and complexity is justified by the threat in the field." Ring said it has "implemented safeguards in our Ring Alarm system to help address wireless signal jamming, and we will continue inventing ways to help protect our customers," but did not get more specific. SimpliSafe responded that it continually refines its jam detection algorithm and releases "security updates to safeguard our system against jamming vulnerabilities." Abode pointed to the fact that it offers jam detection as a standard feature but did not address the jamming itself. Manufacturers that don't curren...

Image
(CNN) Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Friday he is planning to ask lawmakers for emergency funding for campus security at historically Black colleges and universities following an alarming pattern of bomb threats at HBCUs across the state -- and the country. Among them, Norfolk State University, which received a bomb threat on Friday, according to a statement from Javaune Adams-Gaston, the university's president. University officials asked the campus community to shelter in place while authorities secured the area, the statement said. "As we continue our course for the semester, we will have to stay strong and support each other so that we can achieve the many tasks that we have set before us," the president added. "While the impact of COVID-19, threats targeted towards HBCUs, and global conflict, is significant, we remain strong." Image
Aer Lingus is hiring 500 cabin crew and ground handling staff ahead of summer but says worsening delays with extra security background checks could hinder the process. Airlines warn that delays with "enhanced" Garda security background checks required for all aviation workers since January 1st could hit holiday season hiring plans. Lynn Embleton, Aer Lingus chief executive, said on Friday that delays had lengthened since the industry first highlighted the issue early this month. The Irish carrier is hiring 500 workers between cabin crew and ground handlers in coming weeks as it prepares to boost operations for summer. They need training before starting work, but cannot start this without special ID passes issued once An Garda Síochána has confirmed...

Des Moines siblings credit ADT security system for surviving water heater's carbon monoxide leak - Des Moines Register

Image
Show Caption Hide Caption Carbon monoxide: Tips to stay safe Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fossil fuels burn. In the home, heating and cooking equipment are possible sources of carbon monoxide. USA TODAY Reda Stajcar's weekly Sunday grill-out could've ended very differently earlier last month. In the middle of the night on Sunday, June 6, Stajcar, a Des Moines homeowner and full-time sergeant with the Iowa National Guard, received a call from her home security system service, ADT Security Services, to inform her that a sensor in her basement was warning of unusual levels of carbon monoxide in her home. Fortunately, the call came in time, and Stajcar and her brother, Kenny Ayers, who was at her home earlier in the day, were rescued because of the quick catch. "I feel blessed," said Stajcar. "I...

Ending 3G service sparks fears of an "alarmaggedon" - Axios

Image
AT&T's planned shutdown of its 3G network Tuesday has sparked fears that home security systems, medical alert monitors and a range of other devices will stop working. Why it matters: Carriers have previously retired networks, but this transition is proving more complicated because the pandemic hindered companies that rely on 3G services from making upgrades. Plus, there are just more devices to manage. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon are all planning to shut down their 3G networks this year to support new 5G services. Driving the news: AT&T, which first announced plans to sunset its 3G network in 2019, says less than 1% of its mobile data traffic runs on that network. The company has offered customers free and discounted 4G LTE phones to help them upgrade, totaling about 2 million replacements. What to watch:  AT&T says phone coverage will not be affected, but it's not just phones that use the company's 3G network. 3G-connected cars — inc...

High-tech surveillance on US-Mexico border contributes to spike in migrant deaths: researchers - Macau Business

The use of high-tech surveillance systems on the U.S.-Mexico border has contributed to an alarming spike in the deaths of migrants, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is experimenting robotic dogs as part of new high-tech surveillance systems in the Arizona desert along the U.S.-Mexico border, according to researchers. These headless, four-legged and 100-pound "ground drones" would be tasked with looking for migrants within roughly 41,500 square miles. However, the use of high-tech surveillance systems in the Arizona border region has directly contributed to an alarming spike in the deaths of migrants, according to the latest study from Geoffrey Boyce, academic director of the Earlham College Border Studies Program, and Sam Chambers, a researcher at the University of Arizona. The study found a roughly 643 percent increase in the rate of mortality in the Arizona border region between 2006 and 2020, since ...
