Volusia County Council Dist. 4 candidates Post and Bonarrigo disagree on 'effectiveness' - Daytona Beach News-Journal Volusia County Council Dist. 4 candidates Post and Bonarrigo disagree on 'effectiveness' - Daytona Beach News-Journal Posted: 30 Sep 2020 02:33 AM PDT Voters' feelings about District 4 Councilwoman Heather Post seem to be a measure of extremes. Everywhere one turns, people either like her or dislike her, with little nuance in-between. So when Ormond Beach resident and local manufacturing business owner Barbara Bonarrigo decided to run against Post last year, their respective camps were easily recognizable. Those who don't like Post are in the Bonarrigo camp. The goal of ousting Post from the seat was made clear by one of Bonarrigo's first phrases during a Citizens for Ormond Beach candidate forum last week. "Currently we have an ineffective person on the county council ...

CCSO 911 communication officers wanted; starting pay increased - Citrus County Chronicle CCSO 911 communication officers wanted; starting pay increased - Citrus County Chronicle Posted: 22 Sep 2020 07:32 AM PDT Tiana Jarrell's eyes scoured a cluster of computer monitors with maps and details on 911 calls. Her hands glided across keyboards, ready to take a sudden phone call for help and relay the emergency to appropriate responders. Jarrell's first shift alone "on the floor" of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office's 911 Communications Center inside the Emergency Operations Center was July 4, 2020. Independence Day seemed somewhat fitting as it marked the end of Jarrell's 700 hours of paid intake training after her hiring in February. Jarrell was drawn into the job because of its parameters, qualification requirements and benefits. "The obvious rewards are helping people, and I t...

Switzerland Votes in Referendum on Limiting Immigration from EU - Voice of America Switzerland Votes in Referendum on Limiting Immigration from EU - Voice of America Posted: 27 Sep 2020 04:03 AM PDT Switzerland is voting Sunday in a referendum on limiting immigration from the European Union and some other domestic measures. If the freedom-of-movement proposal by the populist Swiss People's Party were to pass, it would give preferential access to jobs, social protection and benefits to Swiss citizens over those from the 27 countries of the EU, of which Switzerland is not a member. It also could lead to reciprocal disadvantages to Swiss citizens wanting to live or work in any of the EU member countries. Approval of the measure could endanger trade relations with the EU, which is Switzerland's biggest trading partner. About 1.4 million EU citizens live in Switzerland, a country of roughly 8.2 million, while some 500,000 Swiss li...

How to Beat a Polygraph Test - New York Times

How to Beat a Polygraph Test - New York Times How to Beat a Polygraph Test - New York Times Posted: 12 Apr 2015 12:00 AM PDT "A polygraph is nothing more than a psychological billy club used to coerce and intimidate people," says Doug Williams, a former Oklahoma City police detective and polygraph examiner who for 36 years has trained people to pass the lie-detector test. The first step is not to be intimidated. Most tests include two types of questions: relevant ones about a specific incident ("Did you leak classified information to The New York Times?") and broader so-called control questions ("Have you ever lied to anyone who trusted you?"). The test assumes that an innocent person telling the truth will have a stronger reaction to the control questions than to the relevant ones. Before your test, practice deciphering between the two question types. "Go to the beach" when you hear a relevant quest...

Lie detectors are creeping into UK policing and they still don't work - Wired.co.uk Lie detectors are creeping into UK policing and they still don't work - Wired.co.uk Posted: 09 Sep 2020 12:00 AM PDT Ira Gay Sealy / The Denver Post via Getty Images Until recently, the most famous application of the polygraph machine in the United Kingdom was probably the Jeremy Kyle Show . Unlike in the United States, where there are an estimated three million tests a year, the so-called 'lie detector' has never really caught on in Britain. But that's starting to change. The machine – which measures breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and sweat in an attempt to detect deception – is slowly creeping into British policing. Since 2007, it's been used with sex offenders to assess whether they are likely to reoffend if released. Now, two bills working their way through Parliament are set to expand the use of the p...
