WALLA WALLA, Washington – The long testing process for five newly hired Walla Walla Police officers continues. On Tuesday, they started basic law enforcement academy in Spokane.

"They'll be up there for five months," said WWPD Chief Scott Bieber.  "I believe they graduate June 17".

Bieber said the officers already passed rigorous tests.

"They all started this testing process last June," Bieber said. "I told them at that time, we had four or five immediate openings, but don't believe that that's going to be meaning that you're going to be immediately hired."

He said it's a long testing process including written and physical agility tests. with the first day or two of testing is the written test.  Then there's an appearance before an oral board. The scores are combined.

"And if you're in the top five, I get what's called the Rule of Five, so I can hire anyone of those top five," Bieber said. "We interview, then we give what's called a conditional offer of employment.  Then the fun starts. You have to pass a polygraph exam. You have to pass a medical physical and a psychological exam and a thorough background investigation."
