Velma sex offender wanted for violating probation - Duncan Banner

A Velma man who violated probation on multiple counts has a warrant out for his arrest regarding second degree rape charges pressed in 2016.

According to court documents, Dathan Colby Speight, who was 18-years-old at the time of the crimes committed in 2016, was convicted of rape in the second degree and second degree rape by instrumentation for violating two girls who were 15-years-old at the time.

According to police reports, at about 5:20 p.m. May 22, 2016, task force agents were contacted by Velma Police asking to assist in the investigation of the rape of a minor.

When interviewed by police, Speight advised he did not remember having sex with the victim, because “he was high on marijuana [sic].”

In a later interview, Speight admitted to committing sexual acts with the victim by stating “he knew having sex with [the victim] was wrong.”

On May 23, police were also advised the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office had received a report regarding Speight and another minor.

According to police reports, a concerned parent contacted police after going through the minor’s phone and finding nude photos of both their child and Speight, along with text conversations pertaining to sex.

When contacted again, Speight admitted to sending lewd photos of himself to the second minor and also engaged in sexual activities.

Originally, Speight plead not guilty in August 2016, though he later changed his plea to guilty in June 2017.

Both charges carried a term of 10 years in the department of corrections though Speight received all but the first year suspended.

Documents from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections outline almost a dozen ways Speight has broken his probation since his release.

On Oct. 24, Speight was subject to a polygraph test, which are conducted biannually. During his polygraph, Speight allegedly admitted to using methamphetamines and, on two separate occasions, Xanax bars and a depression pill. A urinalysis later showed he tested positive for THC.

Additionally, Speight admitted during the polygraph test to touching a .22, a 30.06 rifle and possibly a .9 mm hand gun since the beginning of his probation. Speight stated a friend tried to hand him the guns and denied shooting the weapons.

On Sept. 14, Duncan police arrested Speight for driving under suspension with expired insurance. He also had been flagged for failure to pay taxes due to state in Duncan Municipal Court.

Documents regarding the motion to revoke Speight’s suspended sentence indicate he also failed the sex offender treatment program to which he was sentenced. According to reports, Speight missed three consecutive weeks, had not attended since Sept. 29, 2018, and only attended 12 of the required 21 weekly sessions.

Speight also admitted during his polygraph test to having sexual contact with eight or nine females between the ages of 17 and 20 since he started probation; having minors in his home since his probation started; having a crush on and propositioning sex to a 17 year old female; accessing the internet on a computer or smartphone and creating a gmail account; and navigating through three different porn sites.

Documents also report Speight admitted to seeing nude images of minors which were sent to him on his cellphone since starting probation. Topless photos of a woman identified to be his adult girlfriend were also found in his phone, reports state.

A report from Oklahoma Department of Corrections advised Speight is at moderate risk to reoffend.

“Speight has not performed well on supervision,” documents state. “He has continued to engage in risky behavior by associating with minors, using drugs and alcohol and accessing porn on his phone … Speight does not seem to acknowledge his behavior as a problem. (Officers) believe Speight is a risk to the community.”

A warrant with a $10,000 bond has been set for Speight. When Speight is arrested, he is to appear before the court to set a full hearing.
